  • Spreading catch crop seed

Did you know that you can also spread seeds with your fertiliser spreader?

Sowing a catch crop after harvesting the main crop is important for a good soil structure with a high humus content, for binding nitrogen and for complying with greening requirements. To optimise field emergence, this is usually carried out with a seed drill in combination with appropriate tillage. In some situations, however, it can make sense to spread the catch crop seed with a fertiliser spreader. Significantly higher output, lower costs and fewer passes are reasons in favour of this, especially if subsequent shallow tillage or similar is to be carried out anyway.

    Setting with seeds

Spreading seeds with the fertiliser spreader is generally not a problem. As with fertilisers, the shape, size and weight of the seeds play a decisive role in good distribution. You will find the setting values for your fertiliser spreader in the fertiliser charts under "Seeds".

Due to the low specific weight and the low application rate of seeds, the normal calibration test cannot be carried out. Use the kg/ha values given in the table as a guide. Check the quantity applied after 0.5 or 1.0 ha of spreading area.

    Spreader with electronic control

Depending on the possible working width and application rate, the mass flow is usually quite low for seed. In this case, the flow factor is no longer displayed in the fertiliser chart. Particularly with fine seeds, proper automatic control according to weight and forward speed with EMC control or W weighing control is then no longer recommended. Set your machine to "Man scale" in the "Machine settings" menu of the spreader computer and enter the scale value from the fertiliser chart. Now maintain the selected forward speed when working.

    Working width

Depending on the flight characteristics of the seed, it may not be possible to achieve your usual working width. In this case, the app will inform you of the maximum possible working width.

To find fertiliser charts for a different working width, create a new machine profile in the app with a correspondingly lower working width.

Depending on the seed, select the working width as low as is still possible with your existing spreading disc type (here in the example yellow mustard, S4 disc, 16 m) or buy the correspondingly larger spreading discs from an agricultural machinery dealer.

I can't find my seeds in the fertiliser charts?

Especially with the large number of greening mixtures on offer, there are not fertiliser charts for all seeds. In this case, either select a setting for the seed with the highest percentage in the mixture and check the lateral distribution with a practical test set or contact our test centre.

  • What are split tables?

With a few fertilisers, you can achieve an even better spreading pattern if you select a different setting for the fertiliser spreader depending on the application rate. This is indicated in the fertiliser charts by "splitting" the chart.

In this example, select the S 12-1 with shutter slide position 0-270 for small quantities or low forward speeds and the S 12-2 for shutter slide position 240-600 for larger quantities. The respective shutter slide position depends on the so-called mass flow. We specify this mass flow in kg/min, comparable to the volume flow of a field sprayer in litres/min.

The mass flow (m) is calculated from the working width (AB), travelling speed (v) and application rate (AM) using the following formula:

    m (kg/min) = AM (kg/ha) * v (km/h) * AB (m) / 600

Depending on the flow properties of the fertiliser, the mass flow varies depending on the shutter slide position.
In our example, we have a mass flow of 115 kg/min at shutter slide position 240, which is approx. 130 kg/ha at 15 km/h and 36 metres.

With another fertiliser, e.g. lime ammonium nitrate, the mass flow at slide position 240 is 190 kg/min, which would be 200 kg/ha at 15 km/h and 36 m.

This information is best found in the Internet fertiliser charts; unfortunately, the app does not have enough display options for this.

OptiPoint/width section control

  • What kind of overlap tolerance do I set?

The tolerance depends on the accuracy of the correction signal. With Egnos, a tolerance of 30cm is recommended, with RTK an accuracy of 5-10cm is achieved

  • What degree of overlap should I set?

For optimum field coverage, we recommend a degree of overlap of 100%

  • How many sections can my spreader switch?

    • AXIS H EMC with Teejet job computer:
12 sections can be switched with software > 4.10.00
    • AXIS M with AGP adjustment or VSD:
8 sections can be switched here
    • AXIS M V4:
here the application rate can be reduced in 4 stages.
  • Can my spreader also switch off sections from the inside to the outside?

    • AXIS-M xx.2 VSD and AXIS-H xx.2: VariSpread-dynamic is supported: Here, the minimum 8 sections can be switched from outside to inside. The spreader can also switch the sections completely from one side to the other
    • AXIS-M xx.1 V8 and AXIS-H xx.1: Here, the 8 sections can only be switched from outside to inside

Hydraulic spreader

  • Can I also operate my spreader with load sensing?

AXIS H can also be operated via load sensing

  • How do I switch from constant current to load sensing?

When delivered, the AXIS-H is set to constant current. The large P-coupler for power-behind connection is included, the LS cable is already present. Unscrew the P-coupler, connect the LS cable and fully screw in the adjusting screw on the spreader hydraulic block (see sticker)

  • How do I switch from load sensing to constant current?

For operation via constant current, unscrew the adjusting screw on the spreader hydraulic block as far as it will go (see sticker), convert P coupler to BG3 for control unit. The small LS hose is not required and can be stored safely on the spreader

  • How much oil does the spreader need?

    • AXIS-H 30.x = 45l/min
    • AXIS-H 50.x 65l/min
    • As the AXIS-H performs an idle measurement in the headland (runs in the background), it is important that the oil quantity is also available in the headland.
  • How do I set the correct flow rate for my control unit?

    • AXIS-H 30.x = 45l/min
    • AXIS-H 50.x 65l/min
    • If the oil quantity cannot be set directly on the tractor control unit or can only be set manually, the following procedure is recommended:
Set the tractor engine speed to approx. 1600 rpm, set the spreading disc speed of the spreader to 1050 rpm and set the tractor control unit to maximum flow rate. Now slowly reduce the oil quantity on the spreader until the spreading disc speed is just maintained. Now increase the oil quantity again slightly. The number of litres is set correctly.
